What Is a Fused Disconnect Switch?
A fused disconnect switch provides a manual means of disconnecting power to a circuit or piece of equipment while also housing fuses that protect against overcurrent and short-circuit conditions. They're commonly used for motor disconnects, service entrance disconnects, and equipment isolation ahead of maintenance work.
Key Specifications to Check
- Voltage rating — must meet or exceed your system voltage (for example, 240V, 480V, or 600V AC).
- Amperage rating — sized to the circuit's full load amps plus any required safety margin, commonly 30A, 60A, 100A, or higher.
- Number of poles — single-phase applications typically use 2-pole switches, while three-phase applications typically use 3-pole switches.
- Enclosure type — indoor (Type 1) versus washdown or outdoor-rated (Type 4X/12) enclosures depending on the environment.
Fuse Class and Compatibility
Fused disconnects are typically designed around a specific UL fuse class — Class J and Class R are common in industrial applications. The switch, fuse clips, and fuses themselves need to match in class and current rating; substituting the wrong fuse class into a switch can void its short-circuit current rating (SCCR). If you're replacing fuses, confirm the class stamped on the switch's nameplate before ordering.
Fused vs. Non-Fused Disconnects
Non-fused disconnects provide manual isolation only, with overcurrent protection handled elsewhere in the circuit — typically by an upstream breaker. Fused disconnects combine isolation and overcurrent protection in a single device, which is useful where local, visible fuse protection is required by code or by the equipment manufacturer's specification. Check your panel schedule or equipment documentation to confirm which type your application calls for.
Choosing the Right Switch for Your Panel
When replacing an existing disconnect, the safest approach is to match the exact catalog number and series from the nameplate. If that exact part is discontinued, a surplus or used unit of the same catalog number is often the most reliable replacement, since it guarantees identical fit, wiring, and ratings without needing to re-engineer the circuit for a substitute product.
