How to Read Obsolete Part Numbers, Markings, and Cross-References
- NOS (new old stock): unused parts manufactured years ago and never installed.
- JEDEC "2N" numbers: the same number can be made by several manufacturers. The 2N3055, for example, has been made by ON Semiconductor, Solitron Devices, Advanced Semiconductor, and Microsemi, among others.
- NTE and ECG numbers: replacement-brand house numbers that map to original manufacturer part numbers. NTE Electronics closed in 2024, so original-number matching matters more than ever.
- Suffixes and date codes: always compare the full marking, including suffix letters and numbers, to the manufacturer datasheet. Suffixes can change speed grade, package, or temperature range, and date-code formats vary by manufacturer.
Common Obsolete Part Problems and What to Do
- Can't find an NTE or ECG replacement: search by the original manufacturer number or match the specifications. Many of our listings include the NTE/ECG cross-reference number in the title.
- Original part is discontinued: Texas Instruments, for example, lists some ADC0809 variants as no longer manufactured. NOS stock lets you buy the original part.
- Vintage computer or arcade board has bad memory chips: 4116 DRAMs, used in systems from the Apple II to arcade games such as Defender and Missile Command, run on three supply voltages. Confirm all three are present at the socket before swapping chips.
- Amplifier or power supply needs a TO-3 power transistor: match voltage, current, and power ratings to the datasheet. The 2N3055 is rated 60 V, 15 A, 115 W.
- Need matching parts for a full repair: many items are available in lots of 10.
Compatibility Notes Before You Order
- Same number, different manufacturer: compare the datasheet ratings for the specific manufacturer's part, not just the part number.
- TO-3 mounting: on the 2N3055 the metal case is the collector terminal, so check your mounting and insulation hardware.
- Stud-mount diodes: check the polarity stated in each listing title (cathode to stud or reverse polarity).
- Condition: each listing states whether the part is NOS, new, or used. Sockets and mounting hardware are not included unless listed.
Obsolete Electronic Components FAQ
What does NOS mean on electronic components?
NOS means new old stock: unused parts manufactured years ago and never installed.
Can I still buy NTE and ECG replacement parts?
NTE Electronics closed in 2024. We stock NOS NTE- and ECG-marked parts and list the original manufacturer number so you can cross-reference them.
Can I use a 2N3055 from a different manufacturer?
Compare the datasheet ratings. The ON Semiconductor 2N3055 is rated 60 V VCEO, 15 A, and 115 W in a TO-204AA (TO-3) case.
