The LM317 is an adjustable positive linear voltage regulator originally designed by Bob Dobkin at National Semiconductor in 1976 and since second-sourced by many manufacturers, SGS (later SGS-Thomson, now STMicroelectronics) among them. Published ratings are a 1.25V to 37V adjustable output, a 3V to 40V input-to-output differential and 1.5A maximum output current in the TO-220 package. NTE's published replacement list confirms the aftermarket cross-references: the NTE956 / ECG956 replaces the LM317, LM317T and the RCA SK9215, along with numerous house numbers. The LM337 is the negative-output complement.
