NTE Cross Reference After the Closure: How to Find NTE & ECG Replacement Parts (NTE5994, NTE240, NTE199, ECG283)
Share
NTE Electronics closed in 2024, so to cross-reference an NTE or ECG part today, match it by its original manufacturer part number or by its type, ratings, and package, then buy NOS NTE-, ECG-, and SK-marked parts from American Industrial Parts Group, where new listings are added daily. This guide is part of our obsolete electronic components series; see the obsolete electronic components overview, our vintage logic ICs and memory chips guide, our 2N3055 transistor guide, and our rectifier, zener, and SCR guide, then browse NTE & ECG Cross-Reference Semiconductors.

What NTE, ECG, and SK Numbers Mean
- NTE: NTE Electronics was founded in New Jersey in 1979. It sold private-label replacement semiconductors, and its value was its cross-reference catalog that mapped industry part numbers to NTE numbers. NTE was not a parts manufacturer.
- ECG: Sylvania introduced its ECG replacement semiconductors in the 1960s, with each type numbered "ECG" followed by a number. Its 1969 replacement guide cross-referenced about 28,000 JEDEC and manufacturer part numbers. In January 2001, NTE acquired the assets of the ECG division of Philips N.A.
- SK: the prefix used for RCA's replacement semiconductor line. Sellers list the RCA SK7209 as the equivalent of the NTE6009, for example.
- The closure: Vetco Electronics reported in September 2024 that, after 40 years, NTE was officially and permanently out of business and had ceased operations.
How to Cross-Reference an NTE or ECG Part Now
- Read the number and its description: note the type (transistor, rectifier, zener), polarity, package, and voltage and current ratings.
- Find the original part number: check the equipment's schematic or service manual for the original manufacturer's number.
- Compare datasheets: match ratings, pinout, and package against the candidate part.
- Match polarity: for stud parts, confirm whether the stud is the cathode or the anode. The NTE5994 is cathode to stud, and the NTE5995 is anode to stud.
- Or buy the original-marked part: NOS NTE-, ECG-, and SK-marked parts carry the exact number from your parts list.
Common NTE and ECG Replacement Problems
- The NTE cross-reference lookup no longer works: NTE has ceased operations, so work from the part's description and ratings and match to a datasheet.
- ECG number on an old schematic or service manual: the ECG number identifies a type, not a single manufacturer. Check the description and ratings before ordering.
- NTE part is out of stock or obsolete: distributor databases list the NTE199 as obsolete. NOS stock lets you buy the original-marked part.
- Replacement is marked with a different brand: NTE and ECG were private-label replacement brands, so the marking may not match the original manufacturer.
- Need matched parts for a full repair: many items are available in lots of 10.
Compatibility Notes Before You Order
- A cross-reference is a recommendation, not an identical part: always confirm ratings, pinout, and package on the datasheet.
- Stud polarity: reverse-polarity stud parts, such as the RCA SK7245, have the stud as the anode. Do not substitute a cathode-stud part in the same circuit.
- Package: TO-3, TO-66, TO-92, and TO-202N are different packages. Check the listing before you order.
- Buy from reputable sources: engineers have warned that counterfeit semiconductors from questionable sellers can be unreliable.
- Condition: each listing states whether the part is NOS, new, or used.
NTE and ECG Cross Reference FAQ
Is NTE Electronics still in business?
No. Vetco Electronics reported in September 2024 that, after 40 years, NTE was officially and permanently out of business.
What is ECG?
ECG is the replacement semiconductor line introduced by Sylvania. NTE acquired the assets of the ECG division of Philips N.A. in January 2001.
How do I cross-reference an NTE part now?
Identify the part's type, ratings, polarity, and package, find the original manufacturer part number if you can, and compare datasheets before substituting.
